Dinner

I came up with an idea for teaching the kids a little about money. I drew a large $30.000.000 peso bill (about $10,000 US, but the amount is irrelevant here). I said "Momma and I work hard each month. Pretend we get paid one of these". And I was all happy and smiley. Then I tore off a chunk, crumpled it up and tossed it away as taxes, with a suitable frown, and very briefly said what taxes are for. I repeated for house bills, car, food, and clothes. I had a small piece left for fun. They got the idea. I assured them that we will get them everything they need, just not everything they want.

Then we went shopping - again. Jeans, shirts, and food. But this time the kids were very careful to check the prices on everything!

We got to Skype with Uncle Larry and Aunt Julie in Bayfield, WI today. Even with a Masters in IT I am still amazed that we can have a video call so far away for free. For a moment the girls thought Larry is the Mayor of Wisconsin, but we straightened that out quickly - big fish, small  pond of Bayfield.

No maid service on Sunday (I know, life is tough), so the girls cleaned their room. Bonita!

That made the parents feel guilty, so we cleaned  our room:

And the living room

Rocio did a wonderful job cleaning the kitchen

Then Rocio and Mama made a great big dinner. Our apartment exterior is under maintenance and they put plastic over our windows so we cannot open them so it was getting hot in the kitchen.

After dinner Mayra and Papa cleaned up

Okay - not a very exciting day, but we still had fun together.

  1. Well done! What a creative, gentle and clear way to demonstrate economics - so glad it made an impact. Your girls most likely consider you billionaires and letting them know early on that there are limits to your "wealth" will be so helpful to them.

Love the cleaning/dinner post - those simple, home-y, family routines are so bonding and sweet. Are the girls currently enrolled in school?

    1. Kids are not in school now. We return in early December and plan to have them start after the Christmas break. ESL will be their focus for awhile.
